Virtual Herbarium Project
The project was conceptualised by Prof. Sean Carrington and Dr. Louis Chinnery of the Department of Biological & Chemical Sciences, University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill, where the Barbados Herbarium is housed.
Ms Alissandra Cummins, Director of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, played a key role in securing funds for this project which also provides access to the specimens housed in the Museum herbarium. UWI Biology graduates Kareem Sabir and Damian Greaves carefully scanned the herbarium sheets and entered data from the labels into the database.
The database was constructed by UWI Computer Science graduate Raymond Broome. Funding for these activities came from the Barbados Ministry of the Environment, the Peter Moores Barbados Trust and the University of the West Indies.
